SALVINIA ALERT
On May 6, 2008, we received the first report of salvinia on Cypress Lake. The area was sprayed and Wildlife and Fisheries was notified.

Park Rangers and Wildlife and Fisheries employees continued to monitor very closely approximately 2 – 3 times a week.

The next confirmed sighting was on September 8, 2009. Wildlife and Fisheries sprayed the site.

Weekly observations reported no Salvinia until January 21, 2009. An area approximately 20 yards wide was spotted near the north boat launch. Park employees raked out what they could and Wild Life and Fisheries sprayed the area. Cypress Black Bayou Recreation and Water Conservation District Board of Commissioners (Board of Commissioners) were notified and discussion was initiated in reference to a draw down to help control vegetation.

Weekly monitoring was carried out by Park Rangers and Wild Life and Fisheries employees. On May 4, 2009 approximately 20 – 30 acres of Salvinia located on the extreme end of Black Bayou. The area was sprayed by Weed Pro. Wild Life and Fisheries and the Board of Commissioners were notified. It was at this time the Board of Commissioners initiated a search for funding for the control of vegetation on the lakes. The Board of Commissioners approved a draw-down of the lakes. Resoltion #2 of 2009 Information letters explaining the draw-down were sent to effected land owners. Signs were placed at the area boat launches notifying the public of the draw-down

State Legislators passed 2009 budget which provided $40,000.00 dollars for Vegetation control on Cypress Lake and Black Bayou. This money is going to the Wild Life and Fisheries to be used on our lakes.

Talked with Mr. Seales at Wild Life and Fisheries. Mr. Seales advised they would continue to monitor and spray on a regular basis.

***** REMINDER TO AREA WATER FRONT LANDOWNERS *****
The lowering of the lakes will begin around Sept. 8, 2009. Landowners are encouraged to clean up around their piers and boathouses removing all vegetation when possible.
Remember, a permit must be obtained from Cypress Black Bayou Board of Directors on all new construction of piers, boathouses, ramps, ect. Call 965-2289 if information is needed.

Salvinia was located near the Primitive Camping Area. Parish work crew raked it out of the lake. Park Rangers and State Wildlife and Fisheries continue to moniter the lake regularly.
